ALPHA: Mrs. Edna Pearl Calkins, 72, of Alpha, died at 8:15 this morning in Galesburg Cottage Hospital where she had been a patient since Thursday evening for treatment of a heart condition.
She was born Dec 29, 1881 at Alpha, daughter of Mr. And Mrs. John Calkins; and had spent her life here with the exception of about eight years spent in Abilene, Kan. She received her education in rural schools and was graduated from Alpha High School with the class of 1900.
She then took a course at Brown's Business College in Galesburg. She was a member of the Alpha Baptist Church, the Baptist Woman's Society and was active in church work. She was employed at the Rock Island Arsenal during World War II.
She was the granddaughter of Anson Calkins, who was the founder of Alpha, and resided in the first home built in Alpha by her grandfather.
She was married to Myron Calkins in September 1947. They resided in Kansas until his death Sept 2, 1955, when she returned to Alpha.
Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Mamie Peterson and Mrs. Stella Carlson, both of Alpha and Mrs. Frances Hamrick of Princeton, Ill., a number of nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Mrs. Effie Timberlake.
The body is at the Knox-Wallin Funeral Home in Alpha pending arrangements.
