Alpha, Ill., April 6---(Argus News Service)---Donald G. McDowell, 62, died at 6 o'clock Sunday morning at Cottage hospital, Galesburg, where he had been a patient for two weeks. He had been in poor health for several months.
He was born July 16, 1873 at Powhattan, Brown county, Kansas. He received his education in the rural schools at Viola and at Alpha. He married Miss Susie Beard at Viola Feb. 6, 1901. His parents were Mr. And Mrs. George McDowell.
Mr. McDowell had been a farmer and teamster and for the last several years he had been night watchman at Crescent Lake. He also was employed for several years as janitor at the Alpha grade school. Except for a few years spent in Texas and Kansas, he had lived most of his life in and around Alpha. He was a member of the Alpha Baptist Church.
He is survived by the widow, four sons, Wayne, Russell, Herbert, and Quinton McDowell; three daughters, Mrs. Merle Johnson and Mrs. Kathryn Bedford of Alpha and Mrs. Hazel Broline of Rock Island; one granddaughter, two sisters, Mrs. Allie McCurdy and Miss Mae McDowell of Alpha and two brothers, Robert McDowell of Altona and Charles McDowell of Alpha.
Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the Alpha Baptist church with the Rev. William Parker of Bethel, Ill, former Alpha pastor, officiating. (Rock Island Argus, April 6, 1936)
