Rev. Samuel Jarvis Dennis, OSB oliv, age 91, as born January 15, 1924 in Lincoln, NE, to Viola (Zimmer) and Samuel Jarvis Dennis III, and died peacefully at the Our Lady of Guadalupe Abbey in Pecos New Mexico on April 2nd of postoperative complications. He was preceded in death by his mother and father; sisters, Catherine Dennis and Mary Dennis Egger; brothers: Joseph Dennis, and Walter Dennis and a step-sister Jay Shockley.

He received a BA in Cannon Law and joined the US. Navy in 1941. He was assigned to the Utilities Squadron and was honorably discharged in October 1946. He entered the New Melleray Abbey in Dubuque, Iowa in the fall of 1948 and received the Benedictine habit as a Novice on Jan. 16, 1949. He made Solemn Monastic vows in 1954 and was ordained to the priesthood April 23, 1957. Transferred to Our Lady of Guadalupe Abbey in 1990, he celebrated his Golden Jubilee as a Benedictine Monk in Jan. 2007. As a monk, he held the positions of Prior, Sub-Prior, Novice Master, Director of the School for Spiritual Direction and other duties. From a 1999 family reunion directory, he left this epitaph, "I would like to be remembered for loving my God and my community & my family."

He is survived by a sister, Cecilia Hunt of Lincoln, NE, 32 nieces and nephews and multiple grand and great grandnieces and nephews and his Christian Community.

A rosary service will be held at the Benedictine Monastery in Pecos this evening, Wednesday, April 8th at 7 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Monastery at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 9th. Interment will follow in the monastic cemetery.
