"ALFRED AND HAZEL WAGNER
Alfred John Wagner and Hazel Mae Buckingham were united in marriage August 31, 1939 at Littleton, CO.
Alfred was born Octoberr 27, 1918 to Mr. and Mrs. John Wagner at Wolsely, SD. He attended school in South Dakota and moved with his parents to Hoskins in 1933. In 1935 they moved to a farm three and one-half miles south of Winside.
Hazel Mae Buckingham was born October 10, 1918 at Beaver Crossing, NE, the first child of Roy and Chloe (Hulse) Buckingham. Her family resided in Beaver Crossing, where she attended elementary and high school.
In March of 1937, Hazel's family moved to Winside but Hazel didn't join them until 1938. During the summer of 1939, she went to Colorado where she married Alfred Wagner. They remained there until 1941 when they returned to Nebraska. Their first daughter Sharon Kay, was born March 9, 1943 at Winside. Alfred was a truck driver at this time and was drafted into the service August 17, 1943. He served in World War II and was wounded at Okinawa in 1944. He was discharged from service November 15, 1945. The family became engaged in farming in the Hoskins and Winside area until 1956, when they moved to Sioux City, IA, where Alfred again did trucking.
Their second daughter, Janet Ann was born at Winside, November 14, 1944. A son Richard Lee was born to the family January 16, 1947 at Hoskins. He died February 16, 1948 from croop. He is buried in the Winside cemetery. A second son, Robert Alfred was born May 4, 1948 at Hoskins. Linda Sue was born December 26, 1954 at Hoskins, and Larry Dean, March 22, 1957 at Leeds, IA.
The family left Iowa in 1958, returning to Winside where Alfred became a Winside School bus driver and custodian until his death after surgery in Omaha, May 23 (sic), 1968.
While Alfred was hospitalized in 1968, Hazel received word of the death of their son, Robert, who had been in Vietnam. He was killed May 16, 1968, exactly two years to the day after his high school graduation. Alfred never recovered from his surgery. Alfred and Robert were buried in a double funeral May 28, 1968 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Winside. They are buried at the Pleasant View Cemetery.
Hazel remained in the Winside area with her two youngest children, Linda, 12 and Larry, 11. She was remarried in 1969 to Alvin Niemann."
