PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Akili Jhafi Booker "AJ" Marshall, 27, our beloved son, brother, nephew, uncle, cousin and friend, was called to rest Saturday, June 28, 2008, in Pittsburgh. He was the beloved son of Jacqueline Taylor and Attorney Raymond Marshall. He was born Sept. 13, 1980, in Pittsburgh. Akili graduated from Mount Tabor High School in Winston Salem, N.C., in 1999. He was an employee of International Boilermakers in Pittsburgh. Akili grew up as a member of Wells Memorial Church of God in Christ in Greensboro, N.C. He was an avid sports fan, especially for the Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers, and he was also an intimidating catcher with North Forsyth Little League in his younger days. He loved food, especially "bread" sandwiches, and was a connoisseur of many restaurants. Akili will be best remembered for his infectious smile, pleasant personality and his great sense of humor. He had a gentle spirit and was fully devoted to his family and friends. He was always there to help and to give words of encouragement or humor as only he knew how. He would lift our spirits and keep us laughing with his sometimes unwanted advice and wisdom! He was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Mariam Marshall; maternal grandmother Mary Elizabeth Taylor; maternal grandfather Horace Booker Taylor; and an uncle, Robert Marshall Jr. Akili is survived by his mother, Jacqueline Taylor; father Attorney Raymond Maurice Marshall (Sharon); two sisters, Kiesha Dawn Marshall Williams and Raeshana Shrae Marshall; a brother, R. Laymarr Marshall; a nephew, Noah Laymarr Maurice Marshall; two special aunts, Sylvia Taylor and Rebecca Lewis (Junius); six uncles, Jerry Barnett (Wanda), Earl Barnett (Sanae), David L. Taylor (Julie), David Marshall, Jonathan Marshall and Paul Marshall; several great-aunts and great-uncles; and a host of cousins and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, July 5, at Emmanuel Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. John Mendez officiating and Pastor Herman G. Platt eulogist. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. today, July 5, at the church. Online condolences may be made at www.russellfuneralservice.com. (Russell)
