Joel Abernathy was born Aug. 25, 1969, in Carlsbad to Irby and Barbara Greenway Abernathy. He graduated from Carlsbad High School in 1987 and went to work for Eddy Potash from 1987 to 1992 then IMC Kalium from 1992 to 1999. He then worked for Westinghouse TRU Solutions for WIPP from 1999 to 2003 before moving to Tennessee. He was most recently working for Permobile in Lebanon, Tenn.
Joel enjoyed all types of sports and coached Little League for 15 years.
He is survived by his wife, Selorena Torres Abernathy of Lebanon, Tenn.; four children, M.J. Dorado, Justin Abernathy, Ashley Hernandez and Ryan Abernathy; his father, Irby Abernathy of Carlsbad; his mother, Barbara Abernathy of Antioch, Tenn.; siblings, Philip Abernathy of Carlsbad, Rhonda Royer of Longboat Key, Fla., twin sister Joanna Hardin of Peoria, Ariz., Kim Dibble of Dallas and Jeremy Abernathy of Carlsbad.
