JEALOUS LOVER KILLS SWEETHEART

Fires at Her while She is Trying to Escape Through Window - Shoots Himself

Enraged by jealousy, George Orange shot and killed Eunice Landers, eighteen years of age, about six o'clock Sunday evening, at her home near Troutville, Va., and then turned the weapon on himself, inflicting serious injuries.

It seems that young Orange's jealousy reached its climax Sunday afternoon, when his sweetheart, Miss Landers, and his sister, went for an automobile ride with two young men by the name of Dillard.

Upon their return home, Mr Orange was waiting for them and demanded that his ring and presents be immediately returned. As Miss Landers started to leave the room to get them, he fired a pistol at her. She jumped through a window in an effort to escape, but he fired three more shots. It could not be learned which of the shots proved fatal, but the girl dropped dead just outside of the front yard gate.

Orange then shot himself, but the shot was not well aimed, and did not prove fatal. Orange had been for some time in the employ of G W Landers, father of the girl who was murdered.

Mr and Mrs Landers, parents of Miss Eunice Landers, who spent the day in Roanoke, arrived home a few minutes after the tragedy had occurred.

The shot which wounded Orange entered the head about two inches above the left ear, indicating that the bullet was fired with the left hand. It did not penetrate the skull, but rendered him unconscious, in which condition he was removed to the home of his parents in the same neighborhood. A physician was called and found the ball had plowed its way about two inches under the scalp and lodged. Shortly after its removal Orange recovered consciousness.

Yesterday morning, deputy sheriff and jailer, J G Firebaugh, of Fincastle, went to the home of Orange and removed him to the county jail. His condition is not at all serious and he is expected to recover rapidly. He was able to sit up and eat his supper last night, but has made no statement concerning the crime and his attempt at self destruction. He does not talk except when spoken to and then only answers in monosyllables.

The funeral of Miss Landers will be held at the home sometime this afternoon.
