BATTLES, OLEN M. , age 76, of Gardendale died Friday, September 23, 1994. A native of Morgan County, Alabama, he played professional baseball as well as amateur baseball in the Birmingham area in the 1940's. After serving with the U. S. Air Force during World War II, he worked with American Cast Iron Pipe Company (ACIPCO) for 43 years. He was an Elder of the First Christian Church of Birmingham. He was a member of the American Foundrymen's Association, American Management Associatiion, past Area Governor of Toastmasters International, and active in Junior Achievement. He played a vital role in the Accreditation of Gardendale Library and in the formation of Gardendale High School in the late 1960's. He is survived by his wife, Frances C. Battles; two daughters, Susan B. Moore of Mineral Wells, Tex., and Martha B. Thomas of Gardendale; son, David C. Battles of Homewood; five grandchildren; brothers, Neal Battles of Birmingham, Leon Battles and Hugh Battles both of Hartselle; sister, Peggy Bowers of Hartsell. Services will be Monday at 11:00 A.M. in the chapel with burial in Oakwood Gardens. Gifts and memorials to First Christian Church, Birmingham, Alabama. Gardendale Chapel is directing.
