John York.
One by one our old citizens are being laid to rest in the silent city of the dead. The graveyard is becoming thickly settled, and soon all the early citizens of Shelbina will be numbered with the sleeping millions.
He whose departure we now sadly chronicle died in Shelbina at 3 o'clock p. m. Saturday, December 5, 1896. He came to Shelbina thirty years ago, and has lived and labored among us ever since. John York was a useful citizen, and a very neighborly man in times of sickness, misfortune and death he was always ready to lend a helping hand. No man was ever more attentive to these matters than he; and but few people here, but have received at least offers of help from him in time of trouble. People remembered these things and they turned out in very large numbers to his funeral which occurred at the house which has so long been his home on Sunday afternoon, December 6th, 1896.
The services were conducted by Rev. Bates, assisted by Eld. Marshal, and were, by request of deceased, of the simplest kind. He was once, away back in his younger days, an Oddfellow, and most of the members of that order turned out and marched in front of the hearse.
Deceased was born in Bradford county, Pennsylvania, October 15, 1827; moved to Illinois in 1844, went to California and to Australia. He married Miss Abigail E. Hutchins, who now mourns his loss; as does one daughter and three grandchildren and other relatives. Mr. York bore the reputation of a perfectly upright, honorable man, as well as a neighborly one. He for many years served this city as street commissioner; he was industrious, faithful and an excellent worker. For a year or two his health has been declining, but recently his health failed rapidly. To the bereaved ones we tender our sympathies.
