Ellen Godown was born in Van Buren county, Iowa, in 1858. She was married in 1875 to Alexander Gillespie, and to this union was born four children, three sons and one daughter, who with husband, survive her. She died in Keokuk, Iowa, May 14, 1898, being 40 years of age.

The funeral occured [sic] from her late home in Harrisburg township, Sunday afternoon, May 15, 1898, conducted by Rev. W. J. McCollom, and the remains were reposed in the Houlsworh cemetery.
