Louis and Louisa immigrated to the US from Germany, around 1854/1855.
At age 9, a year after his father died, Louis Henry was placed in the General German Orphan Asylum, of Baltimore, along with his three younger brothers, Henry, Frederick and Charles. There was an older brother, named Julius, who was living in Pennsylvania at this time.
(Records from the orphanage indicate that Louis had been baptized earlier at a Catholic orphanage on Canal Street.)
In 1872, at age 14, the orphanage had Louis apprenticed to a barber, which trade he then practiced for the rest of his life. By at least 1882, he was working as a barber in Washington, DC.
Louis Henry married Clara E. Street, originally from Philadelphia, in 1883. They had two children, Louis Henry, Jr. (1887-1934), and Luella (1890), who died in infancy.
