John W. Elmore, 93, passed away Monday April 10, 2017, at his home in Oxnard.
John was born October 26, 1923 in Coffeen, Ill., where he worked and lived on a small farm outside of town, until enrolling in college at Southern Illinois Normal.
In July 1943 he was drawn to enlist in the Navy during WWII. He entered USNR Midshipmen's School at Colombia University in 1944 and was then successfully commissioned as Bomb disposal & Gunnery Division Officer on the USS Card [CVE-11]. At the end of WWII John was stationed with the Office of Naval Research & Inventions, which was the beginning of the current Office of Naval Research. John was selected to the Navy's NROTC program at Harvard University Business School in 1953, where he earned a Masters of Business Administration. His naval career also included time aboard the USS Brush [DD745], and USS Kenneth Whiting [AV-14]. He retired from the U.S. Navy at NAS Pt. Mugu in June 1970.
That same year John began his second career as Assistant Port Manager for the Oxnard Harbor District where he helped build the ports size and business with acquisition of land from the naval base to expand the wharf space; as well as helping to bring aboard both Del Monte banana and foreign car imports. He remained at the Harbor for over 15 years. John was active as a president on parish council, a lector, and with the building committee at Mary Star of the Sea Catholic parish. John was also on the board of directors with Catholic Charities.
John's personal love and commitment was always to his family. John married Helen Hanser in July 4th, 1946, after having met at a dance at the U.S. Grant hotel in San Diego. They had two children, and the family traveled extensively during his naval career.
