Harold L. Smith, 83, formerly of Haverhill, Mass., died Thursday, March 13, 2003, at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital. He was born in Walpole, N.H., on Aug. 8, 1919, son of William and Katherine (Clug) Smith. Mr. Smith was educated in Haverhill and was a resident of the city for many years. In 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II, and was active for 21 years, then nine more years in the fleet reserve. He was also a self-employed tractor-trailer driver for 20 years. Mr. Smith was also a resident of Virginia Beach, Va., for 27 years and Brattleboro since 1995. He is survived by his former wife and companion, Phyllis M. Harrington of Brattleboro; children Carole M. Blackburn of Winter Park, Fla., James L. Smith of Stow, Maine, Regina Loffland of Cottonwood, Ariz., and Thomas Loffland of Miami Beach, Fla.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was the grandfather of the late James L. Smith Jr.
