Deborah “Debbie” Benson Smith, age 66, of Greeneville, passed away on Friday, March 29, 2019 at her home.

She is survived by her husband of 47 years: William D. “Bill” Smith Jr., daughter and son-in-law: Page and Kyle Nabywaniec; son: Andrew Benson Smith; grandchildren: Ramsey Elizabeth King and Caroline Greer Nabywaniec; sisters: Beth Rader, Patti Hyder, ; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many special friends; brothers-in-law and sister-in-law: Benny Smith and Megan Venable, Bart Smith.

She is preceded in death by her parents: Rex and Lucy Benson; brothers-in-law: Grover Bob Smith, Paul Rader; father-in-law and mother-in-law: William “Dee Dobber” and Mary Ella Smith.

She graduated from Science Hill High School and Tusculum University. She was an active member of St. James Episcopal Church where she served on the finance committee. She was the environmentalist for Town of Greeneville for 24 years and executive director for Keep Green Clean. She was the Team Mother for the Tusculum Baseball team from 1983-1991. Among her many special characteristics, Debbie had a spunky, giving spirit, loved to laugh, and loved her family and friends immensely.

A last rights service will be held on Friday at 11 AM at St. James Episcopal Church, with Father Kenneth H. Saunders III officiating. Following the service, a celebration of life will be held in McMillian Hall. Honorary pallbearers include current and retired Town of Greeneville employees, Sarah Webster, John and Mary Love, Tracy Green, Janet Hixson, Football Group, Friends from Science Hill Class of 1970, Tusculum University Baseball Players 1983-1991.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Hospital, PO Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38148, or St. James Episcopal Church, c/o Kathy McCrary, 107 West Church Street, Greeneville, TN 37743.
