With the death of "Grandma" Mason, Fairbury's oldest resident and probably the oldest person in the county, passed away. Mrs. Mason would have been 96 years old had she lived until May 1. Her exact age when she died at 4:30, Wednesday morning, February 9, 1916, was 95 (sic) years, 9 months and 8 days.
Julia Ann McClain was born in Salem, Ohio, May 1, 1820. On April 30, 1840, she was married to Sidney Mason at Merietta, Ohio. Later they moved to Indiana where they lived a few years, journeying on later, farther west and settling at Steamboat Rock, Iowa.
In July, 1869 they came to Fairbury, locating in a house which formerly stood where the U. S. post office building now stands. Mr. Mason passed away in March, 1873.
Mrs. Mason was the mother of Mrs. C. C. Boyle, now deceased. Mrs. Boyle's daughter, now Mrs. E. R. Allen, was the first child born in Fairbury. Living children of Mrs. Mason are Mrs. M. E. Shader, Lincoln, Nebr.; Florence A. Mason, Pleasant Lake, Ind.; Mrs. Francena Cook, Vancouver, Wash.; Mrs. Sarah O. Anderson, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; Mrs. Dora Perry, Lincoln, Nebr. Mrs. Shader, Mrs. Perry and Mr. Mason were at her bedside when she passed way, at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. E. R. Allen, in Fairbury.
Mrs. Mason united with the Baptist church when a child. She had a large circle of friends and was noted for her simple kindliness and was known in Fairbury for many years as "Grandma Mason." She will be greatly missed.
Funeral services will be held at the home of E. R. Allen, at 10:30 Friday morning. Interment in the Fairbury cemetery.
