Alf's parents were Frans Bernhard Eklund and Sigrid Emelia Salomonsdotter. The family lived in Össjöhult in Vrå parish, Kronobergs län. After Sigrid's death in 1912, Alf and his sister Elly lived with their aunt Anna and uncle Adrian, their mother's siblings. The household also included Anna's son Tage Nilsson. Tage was the first of the cousins to move to America, in 1925. Alf followed in 1926, at the age of 19.
