Son of Joseph and Sarah (Means) Gist; he was listed on the 1850 census, living at Harrison, Darke County, Ohio with mother, Sarah Gist; also listed was his brother, James H. and his wife, Elizabeth and daughter, Sarah.
Hiram married Mary Kemp August 31, 1854. In the 1860 census, Hiram and Mary lived at Bellflower, McLean County, Illinois with son, David and daughter, Ann E. In the 1870 census, they lived at Harrison, Darke County, Ohio with children: David, Ann E., James, Willie, Joseph R. and Eveline. The 1880 census shows the family at Harrison, Darke County, Ohio with two more children - Rosona and James M. The 1885 census shows the family at Kendrick, Greene County, Iowa with James L., William L., Joseph R., Sarah L., Rosana and Jefferson L.
In the 1895 census, the family lived at Lake City, Calhoun County, Iowa; children were Lane, Joseph R., Anna, and Jefferson M. Hiram, Mary, and James M. lived at Lake City, Calhoun County, Iowa in the 1900 census. Hiram was receiving a Civil War pension; Mary was listed as mother of 10 children, seven living.
Hiram's military record shows his residence at Cheney's Grove, Illinois; he enlisted on September 6, 1862 as a private and was mustered out on September 30, 1863. Headstones provided for Deceased Union Civil War Veterans record show Hiram Gist died 10 February, 1903.
