Sylvan was born and raised in the Lost River Valley in Idaho. His father was from Utah. He and 3 brothers , Rulon, Jenness, & Varnel came to the Lost River Valley and bought farms together. His father Sylvan later moved to Blackfoot and his brother Wendell came to the farm he was on. His mother Bessie McAffee was from Darlington. He had an older sister Gloria that died as a child, and sisters Erma and Naoma, and a younger brother John.
He was a talented young man and invented several items of great worth to the family. He is survived by his wife Sandi, 6 children, 25 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren.
He lived in Blackfoot with his first wife Amelia, later moving to California.
