11 May 1944
News of the death of Mrs. Harold Paige at the Pierre hospital a week ago this morning, came as a surprise to her Kennebec friends. While they knew of her illness, yet no one outside of her immediate family realized the seriousness of her condition. After four weeks of hospitalization, she passed away. She had lived in Kennebec and vicinity the greater part of her life, and by her sunny disposition and many fine traits of character endeared herself in the hearts of everyone who kw her.
Florence Elizabeth Huston, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Huston, was born June 19,1915 in Madison County, Iowa, and lived there until she was six years of age, when, with her parents she came to Lyman County, South Dakota. She grew to young womanhood here and received her schooling in the Kennebec schools.
She was converted and baptized in the Methodist church under the pastorate of Rev. E. E. Hatfield, and for several years taught the kindergarten class in the Sunday school. She has been more or less of a sufferer from illness since she was twelve years of age, but she never complained. Even during her last illness, while in much pain, she was patient and took her suffering in good grace.
She was united in marriage to Harold Paige of Presho March 6, 1939, and they have made their home in Kennebec most the time. Her illness took a serious turn four weeks ago, when she was taken to St. Mary's hospital at Pierre for treatment, and where she passed away Thursday, May 4, 1944, at the age of almost 29 years.
Just previous to her passing away, she left this message to her husband, parents and friends:
"Oh yes, what a blessing it is to have you all with me. Yes, i know you all, I know you all of course I do. Oh, something has happened. I don't know what it is, but I want to bid you all good-bye. Oh, what a pretty heaven. It is so lovely. What a pretty evergreen tree, they must be figuring on having a Christmas there."
Then peace and quiet came over her and in a few moments her spirit went to God who gave it. In her passing she left unmistakable evidence of the Christian life she had led. Although all that is mortal of her has pass, yet her memory lingers in the hearts and minds of those she loved.
She is survived by her husband Harold Paige, hand his mother, Mrs. Della Paige, her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. John Huston, of Kennebec; three brothers, Cpl, John Roscoe Huston, of England; Raymond Huston of Rapid City; Staff Sgt Clarence E. Huston, of Columbus, Ohio and two sisters, Mrs. C. B. Walters and Mrs. Oliver Johnson, besides many other relatives. Two brothers, Robert Erwin aged two and a half years, and Albert Eugene, an infant preceded her in death
Funeral services were held at the Methodist church Monday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock, in charge of the pastor Rev. C. D. Arms. Interment was made in the Presho cemetery.
Pallbearers were Glen Anderson, Kip Lien, Eldrid Swanson, Lyle McManus, Kenneth Miller and Bob Heenan, Honorary pallbearers were Mary McManus, Melba Quinn, Mrs. Wm. Knudtson, Mrs. George Berger, Esther Floyd, Merly Nelson and Agnes Spetts.
