John was the youngest of seven children born to John Franklin and Malinda Susannah (Finger) Keener. He married Linnie Catherine Drum in 1905 and they were the parents of five children: Neta Bright, Maude Gertrude, O'Neal Franklin, Lara Eliz, Gaither McDonald 'Don'.
