William J. Forster , 84, of 116 Patterson St., Tamaqua, died Saturday at St. Luke's Miners Memorial Medical Center, Coaldale.

Born in Lansford, he was a son of the late William Forster and Anna Moser Forster .

Bill was a member of St. Jerome Roman Catholic Church, Tamaqua, and a graduate of St. Jerome High School Class of 1940.

Upon graduation, Bill entered the Army Air Corps, serving in the Battle of Normandy during the air offensive in Europe. For his gallantry, Bill was awarded the Air Medal with 12 Oak Leaf Clusters, Good Conduct Medal, and the European/African Middle Eastern Service Medal with four Bronze Stars. Bill was a Purple Heart recipient, and maintained membership in the IWSA World War II Club.

A lifetime member of the East End Fire Company, Bill served as a line captain, and he served on the Fireman's Relief Board of Control in Tamaqua. Other affiliations include the Tamaqua Rotary Club and Carpenter's and Jointer's United Brotherhood. Bill was instrumental in organizing the Tamaqua Bicentennial Parade.

Bill retired from the Tamaqua Area School District as superintendent of mainte nance in the late 1980s.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Honus Forster ; a son, Jimmy; two brothers, Albert and Carl; three sisters, Terry Beddall, Ursula Galic and Katherine Schaeffer.

He is survived by two daughters, Rosemary Allen, Newark, Del., and Susie Comisac, wife of Bud, Tamaqua; three sons, William "Bill" M. Forster and his wife, Maryann, Casselberry, Fla., Joseph J. Forster and his wife, Patty, Tamaqua, and George P. Forster and his wife, Patricia, Auburn; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren. His family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at E. Franklin Griffiths Funeral Home Inc., 655 E. Broad St., Tamaqua, with prayer services at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Jerome Roman Catholic Church, West Broad Street, Tamaqua. Memorials may be made to the World War II Disabled War Veterans or your Local Toys for Tots Drive. Online condolences may be sent to www.griffithsfuneralhomes.com. Interment will be in St. Jerome Roman Catholic Church Cemetery, Tamaqua, where graveside military honors will be presented.
