Rita Arline (Nichols) Groves

Rita Nichols was born in a farm house near Dickens TX on 21 July 1913 to Eunice Virginia (Morton) and Arthur Benjamin (A. B.) Nichols. She moved with her family to a farm a mile north of Roaring Springs TX in 1917 where she grew up with six brothers and sisters. She graduated from Roaring Springs High School in 1930. Then she attended Texas Technological College in Lubbock for two years before returning home to help work the family farm during the depression.

Rita married Truman Algie Groves, a widower with a young son Jim, on 16 November 1935. They resided in numerous places in West Texas during the late 1930s and early 1940s. Rita and Algie's sons, Pat and Mike, were born in 1940 and 1942.

While her husband was away working on construction projects during the war, Rita enrolled in West Texas State College in Canyon TX in 1944. She took in boarders and did part time work to support herself and her three sons while in school full-time. She graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 1946.

Rita and her husband made their home and raised their family in Matador TX from late 1946 until their last son left home in 1959. In 1979, subsequent to the birth of a granddaughter there, Rita and her husband moved to California . They returned to Texas in 1982 and lived in Quanah until 1995 when they moved to Roaring Springs. Subsequent to the death of her husband in January 2001, Rita lived by herself in Roaring Springs.

During her career, Rita taught school at Dickens, Roaring Springs, Patton Springs and Flomot TX. She was a librarian in the Matador school system. She did graduate work at Texas Technological University and then at North Texas University where she received a Master of Library Science degree. She is remembered by numerous students who studied under her direction from 1947 through her retirement in 1978.

Rita suffered a broken hip on 12 January 2007 and was taken to Covenant Hospital in Lubbock where she underwent a successful hip replacement procedure. However, she was unable to successfully rehabilitate subsequent to her surgery. She was staying at Lakeside Rehabilitation and Care Center in Lubbock at the time of her death on 7 June 2007.

Funeral services will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Roaring Springs TX on Monday 11 June 2007 at 2 PM. Interment will follow at the Roaring Springs Cemetery alongside her husband and sons.

Rita was preceded in death by her parents Eunice & A. B. Nichols, her brothers and sisters Ralph Nichols, Maggie Barnet Nichols, Birdie Nell Green, Madge Renfro, Claude Nichols, Jack Nichols and Buryl (Red) Nichols, her husband Algie Groves, and her sons Truman (Jim) Groves and Michael Groves.

She is survived by her son Pat Groves and his wife Kathy of Menlo Park CA, her granddaughters Dianne Dalton of Camano Island WA, Kelly Groves of Sunnyvale CA and Cortney Groves of Dallas TX, her sisters-in-law Ruby Nichols of Lubbock TX, Eva Nichols of Quanah TX, Patricia Nichols of Pampa TX, and Bonnie Bell Nichols of Fort Worth TX as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, friends consider recognizing Mrs. Groves' many years of dedicated librarian service by memorial donations to the Motley County Library, c/o Suzanne Abbott, Box 557, Matador, TX 79244.
