SOUTH BEND - Robert James "Bob" Basney, 89, was born April 26, 1918, in Calumet City, IN, to Henrietta and John Basney. He was preceded in death by his wife of over 50 years, Ann Torok, on October 12, 1993; their eldest son, Tom (Sandy); a brother, Charles; and by a sister, Elizabeth (McCarthy). Surviving are his wife, Louise (Wright) Basney; three sons, Jim (Carol) Basney, Michael (Beth) Basney and Richard (Julie) Basney; a daughter-in-law, Sandy; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Bob started in the car business in Knox, IN, with a Kaiser Frasier dealership, then moved the dealership to LaPorte, IN. He later opened Bob's Motors, a DeSoto Nash, Rambler dealership in South Bend, Basney Ford in Lafayette, IN, Basney Ford, Basney Honda, and Basney Imports in South Bend before retiring to his beloved Naples, Florida. His final years he lived in Fort Myers, Florida, where he passed away Tuesday morning. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. (Knox time) (11 a.m. South Bend time) Saturday, June 9, in St. Thomas Catholic Church, Knox. Interment will follow at Crown Hill Cemetery, Knox. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today in the HICKEY Funeral Home, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend.
