Myrtle Aakhus, age 90, of Detroit Lakes, MN, died Monday, March 18, 2019 in her home under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Myrtle Jeanette Gunderson was born February 10, 1929, on the farm of her grandparents, Ole and Marie Gunderson, in Bear Park township, Norman County, MN. There to welcome her into this world were her parents, Bennie and Louise (Sirjord) Gunderson, as well as her grandparents, Ole and Marie Gunderson and Krist and Annie Sirjord. Myrtle attended country school and graduated high school from the Northwest School of Agriculture in Crookston, MN, at the age of 18. She was united in marriage to Vernon Aakhus in 1949 at Norman Lutheran Church. The couple made their home near Winger, MN, where they were blessed with three children: Connie, Sherry, and Bruce. The family then moved to Fertile, MN, where Vernon became the manager of Fertile Grain, and they welcomed their fourth child, Mark.

In 1965, Myrtle began working at the newly opened Fair Meadow Nursing Home in Fertile. She started out working in the kitchen and then onto laundry until 1979, when she took time off to care for her husband who had become ill. After Vernon’s death in 1980, Myrtle returned to work as a CNA at Fair Meadow. She enjoyed visiting with the residents and developed close relationships with her coworkers. After her retirement in 1994, Myrtle made her home in Detroit Lakes, where she made many new friends and enjoyed time with her family. She was an avid reader, loved to travel, and took pride in her home and yard. She had a passion for planting flowers in her favorite season, Spring.

After a diagnosis of esophageal cancer in late December 2018, Myrtle spent her last months enjoying special time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, brothers, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and friends. She, and her family, were grateful for this time.

Myrtle is survived by her four children: Connie (JR), Sherry (David), Bruce (Mary Ellen) and Mark (Teresa); seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; four brothers: Lloyd, Robert (Doreen), Harlow (Cathy) and Ole (Deanna); as well as many dear nieces and nephews. Myrtle was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon O. Aakhus; her parents, Bennie and Louise (Sirjord) Gunderson; her grandson, Brian Mack; and her sister-in-law, Eunice Gunderson.

A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, March 30, 2019 at the Anderson Family Funeral Home in Mahnomen, MN. A time of gathering will be held one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will take place at Concordia Lutheran Cemetery in Fertile, MN. Memorials to Red River Valley Hospice of Detroit Lakes- The Blue Team.
