As a young man, Elias Conway Bunch went to Arizona, where he settled in Springerville, Arizona, and was appointed judge of Apache County's probate court. While in Springerville, he met and married a Mormon girl, Lucy Celestia Bigelow, who bore him four children before her death in 1885. Bunch married Lydia Ellen Weatherford just five months later, and she raised the two surviving children from his first marriage. Elias Bunch had six more children with Lydia.
As the father of eight, Bunch was eager to improve Arizona's schools. By 1913, he was Assistant Superintendent of Arizona Public Schools, a post he gave up in 1913 in order to become the principal of a school in Benson, Arizona.
