He went to school at Aledo, Illinois. He graduated from Sioux Falls College. He later received an MDiv from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Before teaching in China, he received a degree in TESL. He went on the get a Masters degree from Liberty University in online education. He worked as a band teacher and later spent his life in missions and music ministry in various churches. He served in the Air Force during the Viet Nam war.
Verne is preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Harold Wortman.
Verne is survived by his spouse, Marcia, eight children and spouses, one brother Allen Wortman, 17 grandchildren and one soon to be born great-grandchild.
A celebration of his life will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 13, 2019, at Kerrville First United Methodist Church.
Memorials may be given to Commission Ministers Network for the children of Rwanda he served.
