Hammond Lamont was born in Monticello, NewYork. He received his Bachelor's and Master of Arts degrees from Harvard in 1886 and taught English there from 1892 to 1895. He came to Brown as an assistant professor of rhetoric in 1895 and was promoted to full professor three years later. Lamont also worked actively as a journalist, serving as managing editor of New York's Evening Post and editor of the Nation.
