Mr. James L. Beard, a venerable and respected citizen, died at his residence on East Gervais Street, after a protracted illness, at 3 a.m. yesterday, having reached with a few months of "four score years," and filling up throughout this long period the measure of a useful Christian life in all its relations. He was born and lived continuously in this city, and at the time of his death was perhaps, the oldest native resident of Columbia.

From early life he was a consistent and active member of the Methodist Church, his zeal and activity in church work only abating when the disabilities of age and disease compelled him to yield, while the joys and consolation of religion remained to the end.

His father, Thomas Beard, was among the earliest settlers of the Capital City, and reared a numerous family, of whom the only survivors are Mr. Henry Beard, the well known and venerated veteran of two wars; Mr. Samuel Beard, former sheriff of Richalnd, now residing in Augusta, and Mrs. Thomas Hobbs of Fairfield county.

Many representatives of this honorable family, of the present generation, are scattered over the Southern States filling positions of trust and usefulness.

Mr. James L Beard leaves behind him a wife, one daughter, Mrs. Kittleband of Nashville, Tenn., Messrs. Thos. and James Beard of Richmond and Danville Railroad service, and Rev. Jas. E. Beard of the Columbia City Mission.

The funeral service will take place today at the Marion Street Methodist Church at 3 p.m.
