Vera Abbott, 97, of Boise, died Thursday, March 7, 2019. She was born April 19, 1921 to Thomas and Maud Greaves at the Stationmaster’s house in Shipley, County of York, England.
Vera attended school in England and during World War II, served as a communications specialist in the Royal Corps of Signals and a map plotter in the Royal Air Force. Vera was posted in both Scotland and London, surviving at least two bombings of the city. Vera met her husband of 25 years, Eugene “Gene” Abbott while in London. Gene was serving, at that time, in the United States Army Signal Corps in London.
Vera and Gene married in London and stayed in England until after the birth of their daughter, Lesley. Gene returned to the United States after Lesley’s birth and Vera and Lesley arrived in Boise shortly thereafter. After a trans-Atlantic voyage and train trip from New York, Vera and Lesley arrived in Boise to much fanfare as the Idaho Statesman writing and photographing the arrival of war brides to Boise. The family traveled the Pacific Northwest and Canada on a regular basis and returned to England several times. Vera lived in Boise until the time of her death.
Vera became a citizen of the United States in 1953. She was very proud of her citizenship and served her new country by working as a civil servant at the local Military Entrance Processing Station for approximately 12 years.
Vera will always be remembered for her quiet reserve, great intellect and witty insight. Vera was preceded in death by her parents, brother, sister, her husband Gene and daughter Lesley. She will be interred at Morris Hill Cemetery, Boise, Idaho. In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that donations be made to Idaho State Veterans Home – Boise.
