The daughter of George Michael and Ann Sarah Downs Knapp, and wife of Homer Hole "Rex" McDowell. Lucy Rachel Knapp McDowell was widowed when her son, Rex was only 4 years old. A talented musician, she played both the piano and the organ and supported her son by playing at one time or another at each of the local picture theaters: the Princess, the Palace, the Rex, or the Opera House.
It was her task to select the appropriate music to express fear, joy, love, hate or whatever emotion the actors were trying to portray. After "talkies" replaced the silent films, she went to work at the Home Co.
