On her mother Suzanna Campbell Smith's Find A Grave memorial # 108281381 (father Jacob Smith memorial # 25378519), Ruth was listed as Ruth Smith Kincaid born September 22, 1818 (undated notation). In a newspaper article re: her father, Jacob Smith, Sr., "Remains of War of 1812 Veteran Placed in VFW Cemetery in City", published in the Beckley Post-Herald in Beckley, West Virginia on October 21, 1974 Ruth is listed as "born Sept. 11, 1818, and went to Illinois and Missouri". I used this earlier birth date on her memorial.
In the 1900 Federal census for Tuscola, Douglas County, Illinois, Ruth Ledington was listed as born in March 1820 in Virginia, and an 80 year old widow and inmate of the Douglas County Alms House. It was reported that she was the mother of 2 children, and 2 were still living.
In the 1910 Federal census for Tuscola, Douglas County, Illinois, Ruth Ledington was again listed as an inmate of the same Alms House. She was 89 years old. (However, this census was enumerated on October 20, 1920. Despite her death being reported on March 28, 1910 in the newspaper, she may have been left on the rolls of the Alms House in October.)
In Ruth's published death notice in Tuscola, Illinois, it was noted that she would have been 90 years old in September 1910 had she lived.
"Genealogical Records, Illinois, 1938-1939: Vol II, Part III, Records and Letters of the Smith Family "(Ancestry.com) report Ruth was buried in the cemetery with her daughter, Mrs. Albert Hixson [Melvina].
Melvina (memorial # 13210848) died later in 1932, and was buried at Rice Cemetery (? aka Hixson Cemetery) in Sadorus, Champaign County, Illinois.
