Richard M. Cross was named after Richard Cross, an uncle, and Harriet Ann Moering, his maternal grandmother, mother of Mary Elizabeth Harrell.

Richard grew up on the farm of his father in Carroll County, Mississippi near Vaiden. He later worked on the railroad, as indicated in the 1880 US Census for Vaiden. He died sometime after 1880.

According to the 1940 WPA oral history of the Cross Family,
"Richard Moering Cross, born 1852 Carroll County, Miss. Killed while working on railroad Van Shack, Ga. buried in Vaiden. Never married."

The location of Van Shack, Georgia is not known.
