Joseph D. Boland, 80, of Winter Haven, Fla., formerly of New Kensington, died Wednesday (June 13, 2001) in his son's home in Vandergrift. Born March 5, 1921, in Arnold, he was a lifelong resident of the Valley prior to moving to Florida in 1988.

An Army veteran of World War II, he served in the 12th Armored Division in Germany, where he was a prisoner of war in 1945.

He graduated from New Kensington High School and Penn Technical Institute in Pittsburgh. A project engineer, he retired after 33 years with the Mine Safety Appliances Co., Pittsburgh.

Mr. Boland was a member of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, New Kensington, and the Holy Name Society, Parish Council, Ushers Club, St. Vincent de Paul Society and the Knights of Columbus, all of the church and the Winter Haven American Legion.

He enjoyed playing golf.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Irene Louise Shockley Boland; five sons, Daniel J. Boland of New Kensington, Michael P. Boland of Dayton, Ohio, Donald W. Boland of Allegheny Township, Joseph D. Boland of Vandergrift and Robert P. Boland of St. Cloud, Fla.; two daughters, Mrs. Richard G. (Renee L.)Anchors of Katy, Texas, and Mrs. Michael (Amber E.) Baker of Ellwood City; 25 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and 2 sisters, Mrs. John (Mary) Murray of Winter Haven and Rose Gilland of Greencastle.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry C. and Sarah M. Winebrenner Boland; two brothers, Donald and Patrick Boland; and a sister Elizabeth "Betty" M. Little.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 tonight and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in Rusiewicz of Lower Burrell Funeral Home, where a blessing service will be at 9:15 a.m. Saturday. Christian Funeral Mass will folow at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph Church, New Kensington.

Burial will follow in Lakewood Memorial Gardens, Indiana Township, with full military honors accorded by the Vandergrift Joint Veterans Group.

The Knights of Columbus will meet 7:30 p.m. Friday in the funeral home for a service.
