SANDY RIDGE, NC ~ Virgil “Nello” Shaffer, 90, passed away, Friday, March 1, 2019, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, March 4, 2019, at Colonial Funeral Home Stokes Chapel. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2 p.m., prior to the service, and other times at his home.

Nello was born October 8, 1928, in Stokes County, to the late Troy and Sadie Vernon Shaffer. He was a US Air Force veteran, was retired from Stoneville Furniture, and attended Sandy Ridge Presbyterian Church when able.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Louise Shaffer; a son, Jerry Wayne Shaffer; and a great-grandson, Finn Doss.

Survivors include a daughter, Gail S. Greene (McRay “Nubbin”, Jr.); a grandson, Kevin Doss (Lisa); a granddaughter, Shannon Wray (David); and a great-granddaughter, Sayre Doss.

Memorials may be made to Buffalo Cemetery, c/o Juanita Joyce, 1693 NC 770 Hwy, Sandy Ridge, NC 27046.

A special thanks are extended to Kindred Home Health, especially, Angie, Penny, and Hannah, caregiver, Janice Minor, and the 5th floor cardiac unit at Reynolds Tower for their special care.
