U.S. Congressman, Judge. Elected as a Democrat to represent Kentucky's 9th District in the United States House of Representatives, he served from 1869 to 1873. A graduate of the Louisville University Law School, he was admitted to the bar and practiced as an attorney in Pikeville, Kentucky. He became the prosecuting attorney in Pike County in 1856. He was elected as a member of the Kentucky State Legislature in 1858 and again in 1861. He was elected to Congress in 1868, reelected in 1870, and was not a candidate for renomination in 1872. He returned to Kentucky to resume his law profession until he was appointed as Judge of the Lawrence County Criminal Court in 1883 and served until his death in 1895. He was also a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1876.
