James Washington Terry, Jr. was born in Lincoln County, Missouri.

With his first wife was Cynthia A. Monroe, he had two sons: Luther Terry who died on Christmas Day of 1891, age 13, and Alfred Terry.

With his second wife Sarah J. Lynn, he had a daughter and three sons: "Lou" Louise Edna Terry Schunk; Grover Cleveland Terry, Claud Washington Terry; and "Gus" aka "A.E." Augustus Edward Terry.

With his third wife Lucy Jane Heady Newton Terry, he had a daughter Lucy Jane Terry Dowdy.

He was married a fourth time to "Millie" Mildred Copher Presley Terry with whom he is buried at New Liberty Cemetery in Marmaduke, Greene County, Arkansas.

A "Mrs. Danford" was to be his fifth bride in 1924. According to relatives, he was in a tragic bus accident on the day of his fifth wedding and lost one of his arms. He died a few months later from pneumonia as a result of the crash injuries.
