Agnes McNulty was born in County Mayo, Ireland in 1829. She emigrated to America and settled in New York state, where she met and married James Kiley. By 1865 the couple was living in Rhinebeck, Dutchess County, New York, and their family had expanded to four. The family moved to Grant County, Wisconsin where James began farming. By 1872, the family had expanded to seven children: Agnes (male) (b1860), Frances "Fanny" (b1862), Sarah (b 1864), Edward (b1866), Mary E (b1868), Katie (born 1869) and Maggie (b1871).

Tragically, Agnes died after an illness, on August 11, 1876, leaving her husband with seven young children. Even more tragically, James died at home a mere year-and-one-half later, without a will and with many debts. Perhaps that is why he was buried without a marker, most likely next to his wife, which he had still not paid off at his death. (The debt was settled after probate.)
