Obituary for James Shirk

Gloom was cast not only over the city but throughout the county last Saturday shortly before noon when word was passed that James A. Shirk had died, his lifeless body being found about 11:30 o’clock in the woods on his farm two miles east of the city by Mr. Nokes, living a short distance away. Mr. Nokes had been in Delphi earlier in the day and in coming had noted Mr. Shirk working at no great distance from the road greetings were waved by both. When he returned home the neighbor found his lifeless form beside blocks of wood recently cut and an ax was imbedded in the ground. An attack of heart disease had snuffed out his life.

It was the custom of Mr. Shirk to make almost daily trips to his farm and here he worked in an effort to maintain that sturdy manhood which had been his for so many years, for Jim Shirk grew up in a part of Indiana that was not possessed of the fertile fields and productive valleys as that of his later adopted county. He was a Shirk not a shirker, and his entire life has been one of activity, not so much for personal gain, but to assist those worthy and who by their own efforts desired to advance. Many a man of today owes his success to not only the advice but the otherwise assistance of James A. Shirk. But this could never be learned from the lips now closed in death.

At the time of his passing he was one of the oldest graduates of Indiana University and at the recent foundation day exercises he took an active part in the services. He was also on the board of trustees of Franklin college, being the body’s chairman. He was chairman of the board of directors of the Citizen’s National Bank of this city.

At the funeral services, which were held at the residence at 2 o’clock Tuesday afternoon, the following biographical sketch of the deceased was read by Dr. C. M. Dinsmore of Indianapolis, who also conducted the services.

The life of James A. Shirk needs no eulogy, for it has been as an open book before this community for over forty years. Yet we may well review briefly some of the circumstances which have molded the character we have loved and admired.

Mr. Shirk was born October 15, 1856, into the home of an old and honored family near Springfield in Franklin County of this state. His childhood and youth were spent upon his father’s farm, where he acquired the interest in agriculture which he had keep throughout his life.

His education was obtained in the district schools and at Indiana University. where he became a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity.

After the death of his father, he engaged with his brothers, John and George for several years in banking and mercantile business at Petosky, Michigan.

After his return from a western tour in 1885, he spent part of a year in Tipton, engaging in business, just before his coming to Delphi. He entered the Citizens bank here to fill a position in 1889. When the bank was re-organized as the Citizens National Bank. Mr. Shirk became its president and held the position until his retirement in the spring of 1925. He has since acted as chairman of the board of directors.

The farm upon which his death occurred had engrossed much of his attention since his retirement from active business pursuits.

Mr. Shirk had many interests and took an active part in the life of our city. He has served faithfully in every position. His strict regard for honor, duty and justice has been felt by all who have been associated with him. He has been often sought as a wise counsellor and a sympathetic friend.

When but a young boy, he united with the; Baptist church near his home. Soon after becoming a resident of Delphi he affiliated with the Baptist church here and has ever since given it untiring services.

He has been also actively interested in the local Red Cross chapter of which he has been treasurer since its organization, the public library, the Farm Bureau, the Y. M. C. A. camp, and in all movements of civic betterment.

Mr. Shirk, was married April 5, 1893 to Miss Ora Newcomer of Tipton, who with his son Herbert, daughter Esther and brother George survive him.

May this shadow which the angel of death has cast over this home be dispelled by thoughts of the other home not made by hands, eternal in the Heavens.
He has left a rich heritage of precious memories.
