Shirley Lipford Slocum, 84, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, February 24, 2019, at Blue Ridge Rehab in Martinsville, Va.

Daughter of the late Beverley Crowder Lipford and Hallie Chaffin Lipford, Shirley Jean was born on February 23, 1935 in Martinsville. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Martinsville (originally on the corner of Church and Broad Street) then later a charter member of Clearview Baptist Church, and also One Accord Baptist Church, where she is still a member. She enjoyed singing in the choir and reading inspirational poems in Sunday school.

Shirley graduated from Martinsville High School in 1954. She married Lowell Thomas Harris on December 25, 1954. After Lowell's death, she married William Woodrow Slocum. She and her husband Bill volunteered as assistants at Tomlinson Community Funeral Home.

She was preceded in death in addition to her parents, and both her husbands, two sons, Charles M. Harris (Chuck) and David L. Harris; a sister, Thelma Lipford Smith; and two brothers, Nelson Beverly Lipford and James Walker Lipford.

She is survived by three sons, Tommy, and wife Tammy Harris of Stuart, Va., Nelson Harris of Shacklefords, Va.; and Mark Harris of Blacksburg, Va.; a sister, Beverly L. Yeager of Martinsville and a daughter, Linda, and husband Joe Porter of Martinsville; three grandchildren, Amanda (Jeremy) Aiken of Oxford, N.C., T.J. (Tyler) Harris of Henderson, N.C., and Brooklyn Martin of Stuart, and five great-grandchildren.

A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, February 27, 2019 at One Accord Baptist Church. A celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, February 28, 2019 at One Accord Baptist Church with the Rev. Eric Kieselbach and the Rev. Haywood Alcorn officiating the service. Interment will follow in the Oakwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to One Accord Baptist Church, 3630 Kings Mtn. Rd., Martinsville, VA 24112. A special thank you to Mountain Valley Hospice, Blue Ridge Rehab and Linda Porter for their loving care and support.

Shirley has left behind a legacy of love for her children and their families, for her adopted daughter and family, and for others through her poems of inspiration and singing in the choir, as well as through her service to grieving families at the funeral home. Shirley Lipford Slocum, knowing the seasons of life, from birth to death, to tears and laughter, is now resting in God's amazing grace, in a home "not built by human hands."
