Dale A. Hemkin
( April 28, 1928-February 23, 2019)

Dale Ansel Hemkin, 90, of Brainerd, passed away peacefully with family by his side on Saturday, February 23, 2019, at Essentia Health St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd. He was born April 28, 1928, in Brainerd to Erwin and Agnes (Johnson) Hemkin. He was married to Clarice (Bruggman) Hemkin for almost 61 years.

Dale loved life and all the journeys it took him on. His summers were spent enjoying the cabin and winters snowmobiling throughout Minnesota. He and Clarice loved to travel and drove to all but one of the 50 states. They enjoyed many vacations and cruises with family, and he always fondly remembered the time they visited Africa and were able to experience the local culture and the beauty of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Dale always deeply cared about the community and served for two years in the Army at the end of World War II as part of the occupation force in Japan. He was involved in a variety of clubs and was a leader in his local church, cofounded the Brainerd Snodeos, and was selected for the Unsung Hero Award for his work with snowmobiling by the Minnesota United Snowmobile Association.

Dale started his career as a Minnesota Highway Patrolman, then worked as a Driver's License Examiner, and retired as a Department of Motor Vehicle State Supervisor.

He is survived by children, Susan (Mark) Kavanaugh of East Gull Lake, MN, Sheryl (Arturo Obscura) Hemkin of Howard, Ohio; niece, Carol Sims; brother, Dean Hemkin; grandchildren, Kassi Kavanaugh and Luke Kavanaugh.

Dale was preceded in death by his wife and his parents.

Funeral services for Dale will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 2, 2019, at Trinity Lutheran Church. Visitation will be one-hour prior at the church on Saturday. Private Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery. Memorials preferred to Trinity Lutheran Church.
