John was born c1753-1755. He moved from Nine Partners, now Pine Plains, Dutchess Co. NY to Hoosic Falls NY where his children were born. John removed to Monkton VT around 1784. In 1786 he was elected a selectman and represented the town in the legislature in 1796. In 1798, he became the first representative of Starksboro. John was involved in a number of land transactions the first survey of land in Starksboro VT for himself was 8 Jun 1787, a little south of the village where his son, Henry, evidently was living at the time of the 1790 census. John bought the land now known as the Lewis Creek Farm in Starksboro village. He established a burying ground on the farm that later was abandoned and destroyed. A separate hand written paper by Bertha (Brown) Hanson speculated on possible burials in the Ferguson Burying Ground. She listed [1] John Ferguson and [2] his first wife, Chloe; [3] a daughter, Tammy, of whom there is "no record of death or marriage, children"; [4] Ruth DeLong Ferguson, "mother of John appears in land records first as of 'Hoosick, N.Y,' later appears to live here"
