Son of Olaf Gustav Pehrsson Hall and Johanna Charlotta Eliadotter, John Emil emigrated from Sweden in 1880 at the age of 15, alone. His parents did not join him until ten years later. Initially he settled in Worcester, MA where he met and married, on 12-3-1887, Augusta Olson, born Hallefors, Vastmanland, 11-5-1862.

He had received training in Sweden at the rod mill in the iron works at his home town. In 1891 the American Steel and Wire Co., needing a competent man to superintend the building of a rod mill in their new branch factory in Waukegan, sent for Mr. Hall, and he, accepting the job, brought with him a number of his own country men from Worcester. They, later, found ready employment at this large institution, when Mr. Hall was made superintendent of the mill.In 1918 Mr. Hall was offered the position of superintendent of the rod mill of the Interstate Iron and Steel Co., and moved to Chicago. He stayed with this company until 1929, when he resigned and returned to Waukegan. Considered an expert on rod mills, he was frequently consulted on the building and operation of them by various steel mills in the country. He invented a new steel measuring gauge, which was a great improvement on the old ones.
John Emil and Augusta had eleven children: Harry Wilhelm, Albert Leander, Axel Theodore, Florence Elvira, Anna Augusta,Oscar,Wilfred Emil, Violet May, Harry Archibald, John Edwin, and Vivian Dorothy.
