Fred Richter

WALL - Memorial service for Fred Richter, 52, will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Wall United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Lyla Sloat officiating.

He died Monday at his home at Wall.

Private family burial will precede the memorial service at New Underwood Cemetery.

A memorial has been established to the Badlands Sportsman's Club wildlife habitat program or Wall United Methodist Church.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at Rush Funeral Chapel in Wall.

He was born May 16, 1938, at Sturgis to Joseph and Elsie (Keck) Richter. He grew up on a farm east of Enning, attended rural schools there for eight years and graduated from New Underwood High School in 1956.

Richter attended two years at Black Hills State Teachers College in Spearfish and taught school in the Plainview area.

On July 9, 1958, he entered the Army, serving as a radar mechanic for the Nike Ajax missiles.

He married Carol English Aug. 1, 1959, at New Underwood. They lived at Spring Valley, N.Y., until his discharge in 1961. They then moved to the New Underwood area, where Richter worked for Black Hills Power & Light Co.

In June 1962, they moved to Wall. Richter began working for West River Electric as a lineman. In 1963, they moved to Enning where he continued his employment with West River Electric.

He was a staking engineer with West River Electric and later was promoted to manager of operations.

Richter was a supporter of the Wall United Methodist Church, a member of the South Dakota Electrical Commission, the Badlands Sportsman's Club and a local chapter chairman of Ducks Unlimited, National Rifle Association, Rapid City Trap Club and the Amateur Trap Shooting Association.

Survivors include his wife; one son; two daughters; one grandson; his parents, Joseph and Elsie Richter of Enning; four brothers, Karl Richter of Enning, Ted Richter and William Richter, both of New Underwood, and Richard Richter of Sturgis; and a nephew whom he helped raise, Loch Alsgaard, serving in the Marines.
