Hugh D Rideout of Ballwin, Missouri was born November 20, 1927, in Madisonville, Kentucky, to Milton A. and Pauline (nee Collins) Rideout and entered into rest, Tuesday, February 12th, 2019 at the age of 91 years, 2 months, and 23 days.
He is preceded in death by, his parents, and five siblings, Red, James, Phillip, Betty, & Norma Jean,
"Corp. Hugh D. Rideout, of 16 West Maryland St., Evansville and formerly of Seebree, has been awarded the Silver Star, the nation's third highest award for gallantry in action. It was given in Korea for his heroic achievement while serving as an automatic rifleman with Company A of the Seventh Division's 17th infantry regiment. When Corp. Rideout's platoon was pinned down by enemy fire, he left the comparative safety of his position and charged the hostile emplacement. His citation reads in part, "Even though wounded by enemy fire, Corp. Rideout limped up the hill firing his weapon. After he was wounded again, he dragged himself to a prone position and continued firing, enabling his platoon to rout the enemy from their defensive positions." He received the award from Maj. Gen C.B. Ferenbaugh, former commanding general of the Seventh Division, who is a member of the United Nations armistice delegation meeting at Panmunjom. Son of Mr. Milton Rideout, he was employed by Chrysler corporation before entering the Army Nov. 6, 1950." Hugh was awarded two purple hearts, four bronze stars and one silver star.
Graveside Services were held Thursday, February 14, 2019 at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery 2900 Sheridan Rd, St. Louis, MO 63125.
