Tokala Tokeya Ku--A Lakota Patriot.

Birgil served in the military, and is also mentioned in a number of online articles concerning advocacy for his people. Numerous tweets, online news articles, and Facebook posts have come across my feed lamenting his passing. I’m hoping someone more familiar with him and his life will contribute to or improve upon his biography.

Birgil was a graduate of Holy Rosary Mission (now known as Red Cloud Indian School), class of 1959. Birgil's dedication and labor directly contributed to the founding of Oglala Lakota College. He was instrumental in the creation of The Coalition of Indian School Control, which labored effectively to wrest control of many federal Indian Schools from the Bureau of Indian Affairs, giving authority over to local Indian communities.

Birgil was known in Europe as the "Indian Einstein," and was regularly invited to other countries to spread wisdom to those who sought it.

Birgil was an enthusiastic guardian of his culture, and gave the gift of language and ceremony to others of his people. He hosted an annual Sundance, where Hunka, GiveAways, Marriage, Wiping of Tears, and all important Lakota ceremonies were performed.

Birgil was actively involved in NODAPL, and came to the aid of his adopted son, Dave Archambault, II, who was the Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Chairman.

Birgil was a beloved and well-respected icon in Indian empowerment as well as a dear family member and friend. His passing on is keenly felt.

Birgil was survived by his wife of 53 years, Ethel; children, Ann, Marie, Carol, Marvin, George, Angie, and Richard, as well Hunka children, Tiffany, Monique, Helene, Cecelia, Alton, Laban, Mark, Ryan, Tanner, Charlie, Terry, Chuck, Chad, Paris, Hawkeye, Scott, and Dave, and numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Birgil was preceded in death by his mother, Lucy White Lance-Kills Straight; father, William Kills Straight; brothers Daniel Kills Straight, Eugene Kills Straight; and sisters, Hazel, Doris, & Winnadel Kills Straight.
