The 1900 census finds a new wife, Lorie S, age twenty-one years. She is fourteen years younger than Jeff. The story is told by grandchildren of Jeff that he announced one morning to the children that he was going to town. When he returned he had a new wife, Lorie (S.S. Lorie McCloud). This marriage was only three weeks after Mittie's death, demonstrating the serious circumstances of Jeff's family. At this time the oldest child was twelve and the youngest two and one-half.Jeff also loses his second wife, Lorie, to complications of child birth. The census tell us Lorie has had two living children: Sarah A and Paul. The Mountain Springs cemetery tells us she lost and infant son and two years later an infant daughter. Lorie died four days after the baby daughter, May 1906. She and Jeff had been married eight years and she left two living children. Lori was twenty-six when she died.
