U.S. Navy Veteran (1895-1899). During the Spanish American War he was a seaman on USFS Olympia, flagship of Commodore George Dewey's seven-ship Asiatic Squadron and at the Battle of Manila Bay.

A native of Norway, he enlisted in the Navy on July 18, 1895 at Mare Island Naval Shipyard and was honorably discharged in 1899. Per his World War One draft registration done in September 1918 he was an unemployed sailor, single, and living at the Maritime Rooming House on East St. in San Francisco. In 1920, he was a merchant seaman living in a large lodging house with more than 20 other single men at 456 Harrison St., in San Francisco.

John Ericksen died in 1946, age 72, at Napa State Hospital and his body was cremated. His cremains were interred at the Hospital facility until October 29, 1968 when all cremated remains were transferred to Napa Valley Memorial Park. His name appears on a very large list of individuals who were buried in a large plot named "Napa State Hospital Plot." This is a mass grave with no individual markers. His cremation number is #1988.
