Teacher Morris Academy, Morristown, N J, 1893–94 and Franklin School, Cincinnati, 1894–95, attended New York Law School 1895–96, LL B Columbia 1899, lawyer in New York City 1899–1950 (senior partner White & Case at time of death), vice-president New England Society, chairman twenty-five-year Class reunion committee, member Staten Island Chamber of Commerce and Association of the Bar of the City of New York.

Married June 26, 1909, New York City, Emily Bartlett, daughter of Walter and Harriet Alexina (Ely) Ives. Children John Gilbert (Bowdoin Class of 1934), Jane Ely (Mrs. Isaac Harter, Jr.), Charles Jarvis, Jr., '38 (died 1940), Elizabeth Ives (Mrs. Schuyler Bradt).

Buried in Moravian Cemetery, Staten Island. Survived by wife, daughters, one son, and eight grandchildren.
