Martha was the daughter of Sarah Elizabeth "Lizzie" Walker. Her mother married Mr. Austin Coleman in 1860. The Coleman family were recorded in the 1860 census in Hubbardston, Massachusetts. Martha, age 1, was listed as a Coleman. Austin died in 1861. Lizzie married her second husband, Joseph W. Alger, in 1862. Martha was sent to live with her maternal grandparents, Leonard and Sarah Walker, in Winchendon. She would be recorded with them in the 1865 state census up to the 1880 federal census. Actually in the 1880 census her grandmother, Sarah, was a widow and Martha's future husband, Hollis Sheldon, was boarding with them. They married the following year but sadly their life together would be cut very short when Martha passed away at the age of 23. Their two year old daughter, Lizzie, died two weeks later.
