Hubert Kenneth Blount, 95, passed from this life on Tuesday, January 29, 2019, at day break, under a blood red sky, in his bed, with family and pets at his side.
Kenneth was born on January 25, 1924, in Ten-Mile, Tennessee, to Estell Joseph Blount and Eula Pearl Baldwin Blount. The three of them moved to Roswell, when he was eight years old, to help their cousin W. T. Clardy, who owned a dairy in the area. Kenneth lost his mother a few days before his 12th birthday but was fortunate to have a new mother and later on, two sisters, Barbara and Linda, when his father married Loretta Daisy Humble.
Dad joined the US Navy at the age of 19, less than a month after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He served on the same destroyer, USS Beale, throughout the entire war, attaining the rank of Seaman 1st Class. After his discharge in 1946, he worked for Price's Dairy on South Main Street. In the early 1950s, he started working for Mr. Johns at the Coca Cola bottling plant, located where the Roswell Convention Center stands today.
In 1959, Dad met the love of his life, Daina Lou Chaney. They were married in 1960 at Trinity United Methodist Church, where they were members until each passed. We never witnessed a single harsh word between our parents in all the fifty-six years they were married. Dad went to work for the maintenance department of the Roswell Independent School District as a plumber after the Coke plant closed. He retired from the school district in the early 80s and returned to agriculture. He and Daina raised sheep, goats, chickens, and horses along with fruit trees. They had large gardens and enjoyed life on the farm.
His favorite place was with Mom. They traveled, camped, boated, hunted and fished together. A good day was any day that could be spent outdoors, especially with Daina and the kids. He was very proud of his children David, Dan, and Yvonna. Dad was a quiet man and preferred spending time with Daina and the kids. His favorite trips were those spent driving to Alaska with Momma. He told many people that the "top of the world" highway between Dawson City, Yukon and Chicken, Alaska was the most beautiful stretch of country he had ever witnessed.
Kenneth was preceded in passing by his beloved wife, Daina Lou Chaney; parents, Estell Joseph Blount and Eula Pearl Baldwin Blount; step-mother, Daisy Humble; and sister, Barbara.
He is survived by his sons, David Blount, and Daniel (Kathy) Blount; and daughter, Yvonna Lou (James) Cravener, all of Roswell, NM; as well as grandsons, Nicholas D Blount of Roswell, NM, and Matt (Kerilyn) Kaili of Madison, WI and by his sister, Linda (Lee) Campbell of San Mateo, CA.
